2014 Events Calendar

The 2014 GVDA Calendar has been finalized. The Annual General Meeting and 2014 Winter Season Signup & Tournament will be on January 7th at Sunset Lanes.

Next year we will also get back the rest weeks between signup and the first night of league play, which should make things a little more comfortable - however, please help us secure the fullest and most well-balanced schedule we can by letting us know your team's intentions as soon as you can. We can help individual players find each other, try to put players in touch with bars and bars in touch with teams, etc.

Please also note that nominations for board members must be received by December 31st. The form can be found here. Nominees and nominators should be GVDA members in good standing. Contact us or talk to one of us if you are interested in joining the GVDA board of directors and want to know more about what is involved.

Note: We will be hosting the 2014 Rochester Open on April 11th/12th. This weekend is less busy in the darts calendar regionally and so we are expecting a larger attendance from out of town. Please mark your own calendars or keep a copy of ours close by!

Playoff Questions

We have gotten a few questions regarding playoffs. Specifically, why only one week with 1 vs. 2?

TL/DR: To put the top 4 teams in playoffs would have resulted in less playing time for ALL teams. The format for this season allowed maximum play throughout the entire season for all teams.

There were several things that played into this decision. Here they are (in no particular order):
  • We went with divisions of 6 to avoid putting teams in a division where they did not belong (either up or down).
  • To avoid multiple byes and/or position rounds we elected to go three times around for each division.  (in general the membership doesn't like position rounds and byes).
  • Holidays at the end of the season - often the playoff finals are the week between the holidays, but it didn't work out this year.
  • If we had a playoff of the top 4 teams the seasons would have to be lopsided in that you would not play all teams an equal number of times. This would have been a potential advantage for some teams and a disadvantage for others.
  • To put the top 4 teams in playoffs would have resulted in less playing time for ALL teams - this allowed maximum play throughout the season for all teams involved.
Please address any further questions to your friendly neighborhood board member.

Hello everyone, it is getting to be that time of year again. Fall season signups and tournament are August 20th at Sunset Lanes.

  • Team registrations and tournament entries start at 7pm.
  • Tournament registration closes at 7:30; play should start at about 7:40.
  • We can take team registrations as long as we are there.
    • You can also mail–in forms and checks before the 20th.

A few additional things:
  1. Please fill out as much info as you can for each team member on the registration form; we have encountered many out–of–date phone numbers and email addresses. You can download a copy of the form here to prepare it in advance.
  2. We will be doing a complete review of the rule–book this fall so talk to your teams and let us know about concerns or clarifications.
  3. We didn't host a picnic this summer due to low turnout in recent years. We have a survey about the picnic, please have everyone you know in the league submit a response — it is important to us to know how our players feel about this.

Tom McGinnis

Obituary We are deeply saddened to learn of Tom's passing. Tom was an honorary life member of the GVDA and a pillar of the darts community in Rochester. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him and our collective thoughts are with his family at this time.

Picnic Alternative Suggestions?

Due to very low turnout the last few years we will not be hosting a picnic for the league this summer. It is not really worth the effort and expense when only ~25 people show up.

We have been searching for alternatives some time and a few good ideas have come in. If you have any ideas for an event we could use to replace the picnic, please let us know.

We will have a survey out soon with a selection of options and a write in so that all members have a way to let us know how they like the various ideas.

Summer Season Starts Tonight!

Hello everyone. Summer season starts tonight. The schedule is up.

A few notes:
The new format is designed to be flexible:
This new schedule allows you to start and with two players from each team if you want/need.
Official start time is still 7:30, but if both teams have players and agree you are invited to start earlier.
Please let us know what you think of this trial.

Shoot well and have fun!

Report From Our NWDS Participant

We hosted a NWDS Hometown event to send someone to the beg event in Vegas.
That person was Howard M, and he sent a report of his experience:

Fantastic tournament!  LOTS of darts. Very tiring!  Very, very tough field indeed!

I barely missed the cut but I think I had a tough bracket.  Timmy Nicoll said that I was actually ahead of him going into the last 2 rounds but he finished strong since his last two opponents had pretty much given up by then.  Allen Nutter was the wild card in our group, excellent player and he shot very well.  I only made top 16 in the consolation and wasn't very happy with that.  Should have done better.

Overall it was a great trip and I'm so glad I went.  Had a great time and definately learned a lot.  Thanks again for hosting the hometown event for us.  It's a great way to get players out to these big events.  Only way to learn!

Cheers,
-Howard

Website and Social Media Update

Hello everyone!

Many of you have noticed the new web site and blog, and we have received some good feedback on the new site design. I wanted to take a minute to update everyone on what we've been up to.

New website design

The GVDA web remains the authoritative source for all official league information.

  • The new site is designed to be fast and look good on all systems, including mobile devices.
  • The work is not 100% complete yet, but we have come a long way in a short time.
  • Ed Day has put a lot of effort into creating a new web site design, and I wanted to give him a public thanks. Thanks Ed!
  • Please direct any compliments or feedback on the new site design to Ed.

GVDA News

The GVDA News section on the homepage replaces the updates that were formerly located on the scoresheet or at the top of the homepage.

  • You can subscribe via email to the posts from this blog through the widget on the GVDA homepage, or use the widget on the blog itself to subscribe via a news reader.
  • We chose to use Blogger for our news delivery because it allows us a great deal of flexibility in allowing authors to contribute as well as a enables variety of delivery formats.

Social Media

We have had a Facebook Page for a while now and have been trying to use it more. We also recently established Twitter accounts for the league.

  • These services are now synced up with the news blog. New posts to the blog should show up on both Twitter and Facebook in approximately 30 minutes.
  • Facebook: please like us here: https://www.facebook.com/thegvda
  • Facebook: add gvda.darts as a friend: https://www.facebook.com/gvda.darts
  • Twitter: https://twitter.com/GvdaDarts
  • While there may occasionally be some traffic on Facebook or Twitter that isn't reflected elsewhere, rest assured that all the important stuff is on the site or news blog. (As an example: bracket images and winners during the 2013 Rochester Open were posted, but are not on the site yet.)

Official Start Time is Still 7:30 PM

We have gotten questions about the vote to move the official start time to 7:00PM. We didn't get a majority vote (based on the total number of possible votes) so the measure did not pass.

Given the results of the vote we think it is worth another look - at midseason we will have a second vote on this issue for implementation beginning with the fall season.

Note: If both caprains/teams/taverns communicate in advance and agree upon an earlier start time that is acceptable. If this happens please let us know so we can have an idea of how often it takes place.

Sad news

All members of the GVDA community will have been saddened to learn of the death of Dale Culver, particularly coming so soon after John Rathmell's. Both men were great ambassadors for the sport in the Rochester area and will be missed by all those that knew them. Our thoughts are with both families.

Calling hours for Dale will be on Saturday 5th January, 11am-2pm, New Comer Funeral Home, 2636 Ridgeway Ave. A collection for charity as requested will be taken at Sunset Lanes during Winter Season Signup on Tuesday January 8th.
